When the opportunity arose to volunteer as a photographer with a charity in Uganda, it felt like a natural combination of my interests and experiences. The journeys I had made years earlier to places such as Ouagadougou had shaped my perspective, and the chance to use photography in support of educational projects in Africa was deeply rewarding.

The Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund was founded by Alex and Claire van Straubenzee in memory of their son Henry, who tragically died in a car accident shortly before he was due to begin voluntary work at a school in Uganda. Over the following two decades, the charity raised more than £3.5 million and completed over 1,800 projects across 51 schools.

My role as photographer for the charity involved travelling annually to Uganda to document completed projects, school life, and commissioning ceremonies. The photographs formed part of the charity’s fundraising campaigns, publications, and website, helping to communicate the lasting impact of its work.
